Thailand Targets High-Value Japanese Travelers to Counter Yen Weakness and Rising Travel Costs

Under the theme "Healing is the New Luxury," the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is leveraging Tourism Expo Japan 2026 to spotlight wellness, culture, and sustainable travel in a bid to attract value-conscious, high-spending visitors.

Despite headwinds from a weakening yen, surging fuel surcharges, and rising travel expenses, Thailand is standing firm on its target to welcome 1.05 million Japanese visitors in 2026, aiming to generate between THB 42 billion and THB 44 billion in tourism revenue.

To achieve this, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), led by Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, launched a targeted marketing push at Tourism Expo Japan 2026 (TEJ 2026) at Tokyo Big Sight.

From Volume to Value: Redefining the Luxury Experience

Acknowledging that economic pressures are prompting many Japanese travelers to trim their travel budgets and book further in advance, TAT is pivoting toward higher-spending niches:

  • A Focus on Wellness: Anchored by the theme "Healing is the New Luxury," Thailand’s pavilion showcased health and wellness programs, cultural heritage, and eco-friendly initiatives.
  • Immersive Engagement: Visitors in Tokyo experienced hands-on activities, including authentic Thai massage workshops, traditional fon lep fingernail dancing, herbal inhaler crafting, and jewelry making using upcycled marine waste.
  • Beyond the Hotspots: The campaign encourages visitors to explore secondary cities and lesser-known destinations, emphasizing Thailand's competitive value for money.

Market Outlook and Traveler Profile

Thailand welcomed 742,605 Japanese tourists between January 1 and September 22, 2026. Officials expect the final quarter of the year—coinciding with Japan’s winter holiday season—to provide the boost needed to cross the million-visitor threshold across both free independent traveler (FIT) and group tour segments.

Current data highlights strong engagement among Japanese visitors:

  • Average Length of Stay: 7.74 days
  • Average Daily Spend: Approx. THB 5,232 per person
  • Average Trip Spend: Approx. THB 40,497 per person

Strategic Air Partnerships to Lower Barriers

Global geopolitical tensions have kept oil prices and airfares elevated, which, alongside local currency depreciation, continues to weigh on Japan's outbound travel sector.

To address these logistical hurdles, TAT is working with major airlines and tour operators to boost seat capacity and introduce direct charter flights from regional Japanese hubs, such as Sendai, making travel to Thailand more direct and accessible.
